Causes of Depression
Depression In Men: Usually occurs when their significance comes into question, such as as provider or the role they believe they should play. Other men experience these symptoms when they have overvalued work, certainty, and feeling important. This way they do not allow their emotions to show or allow themselves to experience life. Their marriage and social life usually suffers as a result.
Depression In Woman: Usually occurs when they feel a loss of love such as after a break-up. They usually believe that they’re unlovable to themselves or others. Some woman even try to feel certain that they are loved by controlling everyone. Some women experience postpartum depression which is extreme sadness after the birth of their child.
Depression In Teenagers: Everybody wants to feel a part of and connected to a group. Social anxiety and low self-esteem can come from these years as they believe that they don’t fit in anywhere. They question their identity and if they will be accepted for who they are.
Depression In Older People: Some elderly believe they’ve lost their sense of identity and importance in this world. These people no longer work at a job, and don’t know what their purpose is anymore. They may even question what the purpose of life and living is. They may even experience a loss of connection as they don’t socialize as much anymore.
Is Depression A Chemical Imbalance?
No. Our thoughts influence which neurotransmitters the brain sends to the body to make us feel a certain way.
For example, when we think happy, pleasurable and exciting thoughts, our body releases the “happy” neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.

Types of Depression
Dysthymia (recurrent mild depression): When the person has periods of lows that reoccur, but are usually not harmful to their overall quality of life. This mild feeling is usually based on a limiting world belief about life in general, or a limiting belief about something specific. For example, people may think that love is possible, but not from their parents. This nagging feeling keeps occurring consciously and/or unconsciously, and doctors label that “mild depression”.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): 1% – 2% of people feel down during the fall and winter months with the cold weather and reduced sunlight. Although our environment does influence our well-being, this again does not mean that someone “has” depression. There are many solutions including socializing, exercising, taking advantage of the season with its many activities, and more.
Major Depression: Less common than mild depression, but still affects a good amount of the population. Similar to mild depression, major depression is merely a belief, pattern of focus, language and/or physiology which is more developed. It’s more developed through repetition plus emotion, or one occurrence of an event with high emotion where a limiting belief was created.
Atypical Depression: When people feel really down and engage in activities such as excessive sleeping, overeating, and talking negatively, and at other times feel better when around friends, working on something they love, and receiving good news.
Post-Partum / Post Natal Depression: A feeling of sadness and emptiness after a woman delivers their baby. Their apparent emptiness can come from the limiting beliefs the woman add surrounding having a baby, such as “when I have a baby, I will feel loved”. When she doesn’t feel loved as hoped and expected, the woman may experience postpartum depression.

What is Depression?
Definition: Depression is basically when your life doesn’t match how you think it should be, and you feel powerless to change it.
Dr. Martin Seligman, a leader in cognitive psychology and motivational research, wrote a National Bestselling Book called Learned Optimism. He explains that depression is a mentality that is easy to change.
There are both self-defeating thought patterns as well as self-empowering thought patterns. We now have a choice.
People feel depressed when: they think problems are permanent (forever), pervasive (unable to change it) and personal (it means there’s something wrong with them).
Depressing Thoughts Examples:
First Example: I want to have a loving relationship, but I have trouble finding the right partners and I don’t think I can ever find them.
Second Example: I want a job and the money I like, but I feel stuck in this job forever.
Third Example: My parents should accept me as I am, but they don’t, and I can’t do anything to change it.
Misdiagnosis and Limiting Labels
Doctors and other health care professionals tend to misdiagnose and give false and limiting labels. These labels are used to give both the doctor and a patient a sense of certainty as they at least know what they “have”. People can feel depressed based on their beliefs, patterns of focus, language, and physiology and so forth, but nobody “has” depression. Knowing the truth that we can all feel happy, strong, and with high self-esteem empowers yourself, your friends, your family, and your kids.
Depression Treatment – What You Can Do To Feel Better
People try many different activities to help them feel happy again, such as yoga for depression, meditation, energy healing, and many other modalities. When you see the signs and symptoms of depression, look for the source of this feeling.
This permanent, pervasive, and personal thinking is actually completely false. The amazing thing that you can always change your physical reality (situation) or change the way you look at things. Understand that feeling trapped and overwhelmed are just constructions of the mind.
Change Your Physical Reality
To change our physical reality, we sometimes feel like we do not have options, to change our job, to change our body, to change the kind of people we attract into our lives, and so forth.
The Truth Is: I have found that when people really want to succeed, accomplish and reach their goals, they almost always find ways.
Think about your own life, when you really really wanted to, or felt like you needed to reach your goal, you almost always found ways, right?
If you really wanted the job of your dreams, you searched on the internet everyday, you asked your friends, you asked strangers, you looked for job postings.
In the end, you usually reached your goal, right?
I have found that people who keep trying almost always reach their goal. They do it through empowering beliefs, hard work, the right strategies, patience, faith, and working together with people.
Why should I keep trying if it seems like I keep missing the mark? The finger licking good KFC owner Colonel Sanders got his chicken turned down 1009 times! He eventually succeeded and ran a success chain of KFC restaurants which are still running strong to this day.
Change Your Perspective To Stop Feeling Sad
Based on my experience, the number one reason people feel depressed is because they think they are not acceptable as they are. In other words, they only feel good about themselves if they act a certain way or accomplish certain goals.
This usually happens when well meaning important people in someone’s life only praises them when they succeed or act in a certain way. For example, parents who feel very proud when their children get good grades and who act very mad when their children get bad grades.
The child usually develops a belief that they need to succeed in order to feel accepted, loved and significant.
This is a distorted perspective as it’s not fully true. When I show people different angles and new perspectives, they feel alive, fully energized and don’t feel depressed anymore.
