What Is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?
Definition: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is unwanted and repetitive thoughts such as images, and urges that people can’t seen to ignore.
The disorder is divided into two parts: obsession and compulsion. Obsessive thoughts include anxiety provoking thoughts such as being hurt, killed, stolen from, people hating us, and so forth. Compulsion is the behaviour that a person believes helps them deal with the symptoms. Common behaviors include washing one’s hands, cleaning, doing things in a certain way, etc.
Many doctors and psychiatrists classify OCD as a mental illness or disorder. They usually try to manage the symptoms and thoughts through CBT, talk therapy, anti-anxiety medication, and antidepressants (SSRIs). A therapist for obsessive compulsive disorder may also tell their clients to embrace their illness, which is contrary to treatment. Counselling should aim to fix the problem, not accept it’s harmful effects.
